material Flashcards
Substance
type of matter with a fixed composition that cannot be separated
what are two types of substances?
element, compound
Element
substance made of atoms with same identity (ex. carbon, hydrogen)
Compound
atoms of two or more elements combined (ex. water- H2O)
Mixture
materials made of two or more substances that CAN be separated by physical means
What are the two types of mixtures?
heterogeneous, homogeneous
Heterogeneous
Mixture in which different materials can be easily distinguished (ex. pizza)
Homogeneous
mixture in which two or more substances are uniformity spread out (ex. salt water, vinegar)
Four ways of separating mixtures
filtration, magnetic attraction, evaporation, and distillation
a mixture is classified as what
solution, colloid, or suspension
Solution
- Homogeneous
- particle size- cant be seen with a microscope
- particle don’t settle
- particles don’t scatter light
Colloid
- Heterogeneous
- particles are larger than those in a solution
- particles don’t settle
- particles can scatter light
Suspension
- Heterogeneous
- particles are visible
- particles can settle
- particles may or may not scatter light
Tyndall effect
Scattering of light when shining it at a colloid
