Mastication/Jaw Flashcards
2 Parts of Oral Cavity
Vestibule - Between cheeks and teeth (contains parotid gland and gingiva)
Oral Cavity Proper - Internal to teeth (contains tongue, uvula, tonsils, and palate)
2 Parts of Mandible
Ramus
Body
These are connected by the Angle of Mandible
4 Muscles of Mastication
Temporalis Masseter Medial Pterygoid Lateral Pterygoid All are innervated by Trigeminal Nerve
Temporomandibular Joint
Important for mastication
Formed by the Head of Mandible and Temporal Bone
Easily dislocated when jaw is opened to wide. This is fixed by providing downward pressure
Mandibular Tori
Benign growths on the mandibular portion of oral cavity
Made of bone
Papillae of Tongue
Filiform (most abundant)
Fundiform (contain taste buds)
Ankyloglossia
Resitricted movement of tongue due to short frenulum
Innervation of Intrinsic Tongue muscles
Hypoglossal Nerve (CN 12) Used for movement
Innervation of Extrinsic Tongue muscles
Vagus Nerve (CN 10) Genioglossus, hypoglossus, styloglossus, and palatoglossus
Taste of Tongue
Anterior portion - Facial nerve (chorda tympani)
Posterior portion - Glossopharyngeal nerve
Gleeking
Sudden release of saliva from mouth from submandibular gland
Caused by constriction of mylohyoid muscle
Vallecula
Valley in between base of tongue and epiglottis
Often intubating tube gets misplaced here
All muscles of soft palate are innervated by Vagus Nerve except which one
Tensor Palati (CN V3)
Sleep Apnea
Due to dropping of tongue from excess fat or soft palate into the oral pharynx
Ulnar Deviation
Occurs from lesions in Vagus Nerve
Deviates towards the unaffected side
