Face and Scalp Muscles/Vessels Flashcards
All muscles of face are innervated by which nerve
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Occipitofrontalis
Arises from the Occipital Bone and extends to the skin of forehead
Contracts the forehead to raise eyebrows
Nasalis
Found on the nose
Depresses nose/flares nostrils
2 Parts of the Orbicularis Oculi
Palpebral –> closes eyelid
Orbital –> compresses eyelids (squinting)
Levator Palpebral
Elevation of eyelid
Only facial muscle not innervated by Facial Nerve (CN III)
Ptosis
Paralysis of Levator Palpebral
Unable to open the eyelids
Zygomaticus Major/Minor
Attach to the lip
Responsible for opening mouth/elevating lip (smile)
Risorius
Origin is paratoid. Insertion is angle of mouth
Responsible for dilating mouth laterally
Depressor Labii Inferior
Responsible for retracting lower lip
Mentalis
Responsible for protruding lower lip
Platysma
Responsible for depressing mandible
Buccinator
Cheek muscle
Responsible for control of bolus
Branches of Facial Nerve
Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Mandibular Cervical
Bell’s Palsy
Injury to Facial Nerve
Causes sagging/paralysis of affected side and difficulty chewing food
Branches of Trigeminal Nerve
Opthalmic (V1)
Maxillary (V2)
Mandibular (V3)
Branches of External Carotid Artery
Superficial Temporal
Facial Artery –> inferior + superior labial artery
Veins of Face
Have the same names as arteries
There is a communicating branch that allows for drainage into both Internal and External Jugular
Danger Zone of Face
Around the nose due to the venous drainage
Bacterial infections can spread to brain
5 Layers of Scalp
Skin Connective Tissue Aponeurosis Loose Connective Tissue Periostium
Scalping
Occurs when hair gets caught in machinery
Hair, skin, connective tissue, and aponeurosis are pulled away. Loose Tissue falls off and bone is exposed
Arteries of Scalp
All of ECA
Occipital
Superior Temporal
Posterior Auricular
