Mastering A & P Histology Flashcards
1
Q
2 basic components of a tissue
A
- discrete population of cells that relate in structure and fucnito
- Has an ECM (extracellular matrix)
2
Q
4 main types of tissues
A
- Epithelium
2, Connective - Muscle
- Nervous
3
Q
Epithelium tissues
A
- Consists of sheets of cells that are tightly packed together with little visible ECM.
- Covers all the linings on the body’s surface and cavities
- Specialised Epithelium cells form glands, which are groups of cells that manufacture and secrete or release a product such as sweat salvia or chemical messenger such as hormones
4
Q
Connective tissue
A
-Characterised by its extensive Extracellular matrix
-Functions in protection support and transport
5
Q
Muscle Tissue
A
composed of cells that can contract and generate force with little ECM in between them.
6
Q
Nervous Tissue
A
Unique ECM
Composed of cells that can generate, receive or send messages and other cells that support this activity.
7
Q
2 main components of ECM
A
- Ground Substance
- Protein fibres
8
Q
Functions of ECM
A
- Giving strength to tissues to resist tensile and compressive forces.
- Directing cells to be in the correct place in the tissue
- Regulating development, mitotic activity and survival of cells
- holding cells in their proper places
9
Q
Ground Substance
A
the amorphous substance of the ECM
-contains water proteoglycans glycosaminoglycans and other substances.
10
Q
Glycosaminoglycans (GAG)
A
