Massive Test 1 Flashcards
What is the cardio-respiratory system:
Made up of the circulatory system which is the heart, blood, blood vessels, along with the respiratory system which consists of the lungs and airways
During exercise the system needs to work harder.
What is the main function?
The enable the body to breathe, pumping blood and oxygen around the body.
During physical activity the system works harder to supply blood and oxygen to the muscles.
This means you get an increased breathing rate
Explain the respiratory system
5 steps
1) oxygen is brought in through the nose and mouth
2) travels down a long tube, called the trachea which connects to the lungs
3) it then passes through the bronchi and bronchioles
Getting rid of waste products- co2
Explain gaseous exchange
1) oxygen that has been breathed in passes through the alveoli and into the red blood cells in the capillaries
2) here, the oxygen combines with haemoglobin to form oxyhemoglobin and is then carried around the body
3) at the same time, haemoglobin carries co2 from the body to the capillaries
4) the co2 in the capillaries ugh the alveoli and is breathed out
Capillaries:
A network of microscopic blood vessels. They’re only 1 cell thick
Diffusion pathway:
The distance travelled during diffusion
The blood in the capillaries surrounding the alveoli has a low oxygen concentration because………………
While the air in the alveoli has a ………………..
The ……… therefore diffuses from the …. in the alveoli to ………………..
1) it has already been used by the bodies cells
2) higher oxygen concentration
3) oxygen, air, blood in the capillaries
What are alveoli?
Small air sacs in the lungs where gaseous exchange takes place
What is gaseous exchange?
The process where oxygen moves from the air in the alveoli into the blood in the capillaries
while co2 moves from the blood in the capillaries into the air in the alveoli
Tidal volume:
The normal amour of air inhaled or exhaled per breath
