Flat hand and Effleurage massage

A
  • To apply lubricant and get patient used to therapist’s touch
  • Slow stroking - to sedate, decrease muscle tone
  • Fast stroking - to stimulate
  • Usually applied from proximal to distal
  • Techniques - stroking, bilateral, thousand hands, half moon, figure 8, butterfly, reverse butterfly

A
  • To knead and squeeze tissue and muscle to relieve tension
  • Improves the mobility of subcutaneous tissues, fibrous tissue, connective tissue and at tissue interfaces
  • Techniques - V, kneading, pisiform, wringing, picking up, rolling, rake, reverse rake, cam and spindle, reverse cam and spindle

  • Primarily used on adhered tissues such as scars
  • Stimulates local circulation and increases blood flow to the area, increases mobility between tissue interfaces, increases extensibility of soft tissues
  • Technique - deep transverse frictions (DTF)
