Q
Flat hand and Effleurage massage
A
- To apply lubricant and get patient used to therapist’s touch
- Slow stroking - to sedate, decrease muscle tone
- Fast stroking - to stimulate
- Usually applied from proximal to distal
- Techniques - stroking, bilateral, thousand hands, half moon, figure 8, butterfly, reverse butterfly
8
Q
Petrissage massage
A
- To knead and squeeze tissue and muscle to relieve tension

- Increases local blood flow to tissues, provoke muscle and tendon reflexes, stimulate muscle tone
- Techniques - shaking/vibration, clapping, hacking
10
Q
Frictions massage (types of massage)
A
- Small, accurately localized, penetrating movements
- Primarily used on adhered tissues such as scars
- Stimulates local circulation and increases blood flow to the area, increases mobility between tissue interfaces, increases extensibility of soft tissues
- Technique - deep transverse frictions (DTF)
11
Q
Sustained myofascial release massage (types of massage)
A
- Gentle sustained pressure that elongates fascial adhesions
- Restore optimal length of tissue, rupture abnormal cross bridges
12
Q
Trigger point therapy massage (types of massage)
A
Technique: soft tissue treatment to relieve tension on muscle points
