Mass of spectrometry Flashcards
Explain ionisation by electron impact
Sample is vaporised, then high energy electrons come from a electron gun which knocks of an electron forming a +1 ion
Explain ionisation by electro spray ionisation
Sample is dissolved into volatile solvent and injected through hyper dermic needle to give a fine mist. Tip of needle is attached to positive terminal of high voltage power supply. Which ionises the sample by it gaining a proton H+ ion
Ions are accelerated by
Negatively charged plate
How is abundance of ions measured
Ions gain electron which produces a current relative to the abundance
Definition of first ionisation energy
Amount of energy required to remove one mole of an electron from one mole an atom in its gaseous state
Definition of mr
the average mass of a molecule relative to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon
