Aldehydes and Ketones Flashcards
1
Q
How do we test for optical isomers
A
Put plane polarised light through the optical isomer, it should rotate the polarised light if optical isomer is present
2
Q
reducing agent for ketones and aldehydes
A
NaBH4 or sodium borohydride
3
Q
Why do we use KCN instead of HCN when doing nucleophilic addition
A
very dangerous/toxic/poisonous
4
Q
How are racemic mixtures formed
A
Due to planar C=O there is even chance of nucleophile attacking from either side
