What happened? (3)
A
- Saturday March 22nd 2014, at 10:37am local time, near Oso, Washington State, USA.
- A portion of unstable hill collapsed, sending mud and debris across the Stillaguamish River, englufing a rural neighbourhood.
- As a result of flooding and increasing amount of deaths reported, on April 3rd Barack Obama declared it was a major disaster.

What were the LONG TERM impacts? (1)
A
- River blocked - 20 to 30 ft pool of water collected, led to flooding of homes = damaging long term effects.

What were the SHORT TERM impacts? (6)
A
- 40 deaths
- 30 homes buried
- Search and rescue workers at risk.
- Other landslides then occurred.
- Quick sand like mud.
- 0.8 miles of road blocked so difficult to import aid, all had to be done by air.

What were the LONG TERM responses? (2)
A
- Non-profit, government and voluntary organisations all contributed to the evolving response and recovery of Oso.
- With a high number of potential casualties, lack of electrical power, cold weather and lack of near by shelter, management was proven to be difficult.

What were the SHORT TERM responses? (3)
A
- Local, state and federal responders joined forces in the rescue, debris removal and recovery effort.
- From 26th March, more than 65 members of the Washington National Guard arrived, including 50 specialised search and extractor, plus 2 helicopters.
- Specific resources were provided to survivors from The Red Cross, including food, shelter, emotional support and basic health needs. 3,800 meals and snacks were served and also comfort kits were given out.
