what is assimilation
refers to the idea that ethnis groups will drop their own traditinal normas and values and adpot those of white british people in order to ‘inteqiate’ - often associated with functional studies
van dijk (1991) study
studies the reprisentation of ethinic groups in the uk and ntherlands media over a 10 year period. he used also used content analysis to examine symbols lanuguage and images relating to reprisenting of ethinicity in the media . he discovered many groups were steryotyoed and particularly examined how black people were steryotyped and found ethnic groups were steryotyped in 5 ways
how are ethnic groups reprisented as criminals
the word ‘black’ is often used in description of criminals, but the word ‘white’ is not used in the same way. in support of what Van dijk says about thos stereotype, Hall also found that often dolk devils of ‘black muggers’ are portrayed in media texts

abnormal: negitive portrayls of ‘abnormal’ cultural pratices are often presented in documentraies and in soap operas ect. blanket terminolgy us used when disscussing those, for exa,ple ‘asian culture’ Vanm dijk states that this is an oversimplification. asia is a large area with a range of cultural practices

tabliods present immgrants and asylum seekers as ‘taking scarce jobs’ British ‘resources’ and being a drain on the state. in support of Van Dijks ideas Nahdi found that portrayls of muslims, in particular were very negative-often seen as ‘intolerant, misoginistic, violent or cruel and finally strange or different’
how are ethnic groups reprisented as dependent
negative portrayals of ‘abnormal’ it was found that less developed countries were described as ‘coupe-war-famine-syndrome’ with little discussion of their exploitation by western countries

priority was given to reporting issue that impact white people. Ligali states that the has been acused of institutionally racism due to reporting less incidences of murders again minority ethnic groups.
