The transferring of information from one individual or group to a large or dispersed audience (ex- A nation)
Mass Media
The technical devices used in mass communication
Broadcast Media
The transferring of information electronically through the spoken word (ex- radio, television)
Print Media
The transferring of information through the publication of the written word. (ex- newspapers, magazines)
Interpreting the news
Develop the story, Provide details about the individuals involved, and background information about everything else that connects to the story.
Reporting the news
researching the events and creating a story to report the news
Socializing individuals
educating people about how media influences politics and society
Influencing individuals actions
the story report will influence how and audience may react or take action
Setting the government agenda
decide what news to highlight and how to show it, shaping what people think is important and pushing leaders to take action on those matters.
Covering the president
Fairly easy for the media due to how public their position naturally is
Covering the Congress
More challenging for mass media due to various people being involved. But focus mainly on the national leaders in congress
Covering the Courts
Very little media attention due to Supreme Court cases being boring and the results are not instant and can take months. They are only broadcasted when they come to a final decision
The Radio Act of 1927
declared that airwaves are public property.
Equal Time Rule
f you own a radio station, you are not allowed to give a candidate time or sell a candidate time.If you provide or sell time to one candidate, you have to provide or sell the same time to the opposing candidates.
