Interest Groups
organized body of individuals who seeks to influence the outcome of government (ex. AARP, Sierra Club, NRA.)
Economic Interest Groups
An organized body of individuals who have banded together to enhance their wealth or business opportunities
Public Interest Groups
An organized body of individuals whose main stated goal is to benefit society as a whole.
Single Issue Interest Group
An interest that focuses on just ONE single issue (ex. Abortion, guns, environment)
Multi Issue Interest Groups
An interest group that focuses on multiple issues and is set to influence the government in more than one policy area. (ex. Common Cause, Children Defense Club, NAACP)
Salisbury’s Resource Scarcity Theory
There is not enough resources to go around so that’s when you create an alliance to protect your share or possibly get more.
Disturbance Theory
Something is about to happen or has recently happened which upsets enough people that they form a group to fight back.
Representation
A guaranteed additional form of representation when you join an interest group
Participation
allow you to participate in a group which will allow you to gain more respect and legitimacy.
Education
Educates you on what is going on within your interest group
Agenda Building
The individuals who are non-profit organizations that are coming up with new ideas for new laws or repealing old laws.
Program Monitoring
Monitor the carrying out of the laws so it benefits their members. This is because they want to influence how those laws are carried out to benefit their members.
Direct Lobbying
Hiring the lobbyist to directly attempt to influence government
Grassroot Lobbying
Members of the Interest Group tries to influence government by writing emails, letters, meeting for protest
Information Campaigns
To convince society to favor their group by sending different types of information
