what is traditional media?
all the media that communicate uniform messages through a one-way, non-interactive way. eg newspapers, bbc1
what is new media?
all interactive, screen-based, digital technology that involves images & text and sounds. eg the internet, smartphones
what is social media?
it’s the most important type of new media, online and internet-based applications that are used for social interaction. eg instagram, youtube
what did baurman find (2007)?
“during the last 30 years more information has been found then the previous 5000 years”
what are the formal controls on the media?
law, ofcom, bbc, independent broadcasting and the independent press statndards organisation (ipso)
give 3 legal limits of media’s freedom
-the laws of libel, official secrets act, racial and religious hatred act
what is ofcom?
a office of communications which protects the public from potentially harmful effects of the media and safeguards people from being treated unfairly
what is the bbc’s purpose?
is the duty to represent the interests of licence fee-payers and to ensure the BBC remains independent. no ADs
what is independent broadcasting?
all non-BBC television and radio stations. regulated by ofcom which operates on the private sector
what is the IPSO and what does it stand for?
-independence press standards organisation
regulator of newspapers and magazines and journalism
what is horizontal integration?
practice of cross-media ownership where media owners invest/have interests in a range of different media
what is vertical integration?
media companies increasing economic control in order to maximise profits
what is synergy?
media companies using diverse interests to sell their product in different ways
what is technological convergence?
using several technologies into one media product
