What are the eight basic media?

What is yellow journalism?
Newspapers needed better stories to keep people’s attention. Yellow journalism was built largely on sensational news or spicy features. Eventually, it led to many stories being written that weren’t even true just to have something interesting.
What are the three print media?
books, magazines, newspapers
What four things are attributed to helping the growth of book publishing?
- book clubs (books would be mailed to people and if not mailed back in a certain time period, they were considered sold and a bill was mailed - played off of curiosity and laziness)
- paperback binding - much cheaper to publish
- organization of publishing firms
- boom in education
What are regulators?
Regulators controlled what goes out and what stays in. Example: government, advertisers, etc

Who was David Sarnoff?
One of four major contributors to the invention of radio. Only one who was not an inventor. President of RCA and NBC. Started TV broadcasting (originally known as radio with pictures)
Who was Lee De Forest?
created the audion tube, called himself the father of radio (not the true father of radio)
Who was Edwin Armstrong?
creator of FM radio and the regenerative circuit
What was the difference between AM and FM
FM had much clearer sound, but AM had longer range. AM came first making FM harder to catch on.
What was codex?
a form of book binding originally discovered by Romans
What did John Peter Zenger do for newspapers?
He won a court case that the press could criticize the gov’t if its claims were based on true facts
Who were gatekeepers?
People who decided what would be kept in and what would be let out. Different from regulators because they were involved inside the media. Examples: publishers, newspaper editors, station managers, movie producers, etc.
What was the penny press?
Turned newspapers into a mass medium because it was the first paper to cost only a penny
What was the audion tube?
invention by Lee De Forest, not sure exactly what it was
Who was Gutenberg?
invited movable type causing a major increase in print speeds
What is the difference between the public and the audience?
Public is anyone who could view a certain media. Audience is the people who actually do.
What are the four dimensions of media literacy?
- Cognitive
- Emotional
- Aesthetic
- Moral
What is noise?
Any obstacle to clearly hearing a message.

Marconi
What made reader’s digest magazine special?
It took the best of the best stories and combined them into one magazine.

What is mass communication?
Mass communication is messages communicated through a mass medium to a large group of people…or lots of people talking with lots of people (know both definitions)
