Electronic Media Flashcards
Define focal point
point where light rays converge
Define iris
A hole that opens and closes to allow in different amounts of light (measured in F-stops and also called Aperture).
Define tripod
A three legged stand to hold a camera steady
Define CCD
This is the sensor (I think).
Define depth of field
the area in front of and behind your subject along the Z axis that remains in focus
Define focal plane
the plane where the focused image appears
What appearances do different camera angles give?
High angle shot gives appearance of smallness and vulnerability. Low angle gives appearance of strength.
Have an understanding about the differences in standard vs. high definition video.
SD is mostly square while HD is more rectangle.
The biggest difference is the resolution.
SD = 480
HD = 720 & 1080
Ultra HD = 4k & 5k
What are the four raw file formats for audio and video?
Windows: AVI (video), WAV (audio)
Mac: MOV (video), AIFF (audio)
What is the rule of thirds?
A rule commonly used in photography, but can be good in video too which says that a subject will appear more interesting if lined up with certain lines on a grid. It is also good to have the subject leaning/looking in to the frame.
Define sound
vibration of air molecules
Define amplitude
better known as volume, amplitude is the physical hight of a sound wave.
What is amplitude measured in?
decibels
Define cycle (relating to sound)
one complete vibration, normal to high to low to normal
Define frequency
number of cycles per second, determines pitch, measured in Hertz
Define analog (relating to sound)
imprint of the wave, a type of recorded signal that produces a wave similar to that of the original sound wave
Define transduction
process of changing one form of energy to another
Define digital
a type of recorded signal that is comprised of samples of the original sound
Define sample (relating to sound)
tiny snapshot of audio that occurs many times per second
Know the five graphic principles discussed in class
Emphasis Contrast Balance Alignment Repitition
Explain emphasis relating to graphic design
The most important elements should be the focal point, first thing the eyes see
What is the primary message and how will you communicate it?
Emphasis techniques - bigger, bolder, shadows, contrasting colors
Explain contrast relating to graphic design
If two elements are not the same, make them very different
Use contrast in sizes, colors, texture, and font
Rule of thumb: Never use more than 2, or at most 3, fonts in the same design and make the fonts you use look completely different!
Explain balance relating to graphic design
Equally disperse visual weight throughout the layout
Don’t be afraid of empty space. The lack of something communicates just as much as filling space
Explain alignment relating to graphic design
Use an invisible grid or guides to align elements
Your design will feel much more organized when you visually connect elements
Explain repitition relating to graphic design
Repeat certain elements to tie everything together
What are the three types of color schemes?
Monochromatic
Complimentary
Analogous
