What was the issue with facial expression in ancient theatre ?
No lights nor was it indoors
Hence facial expressions were redundant so actors wore masks which added to the performance
Give some information on Ancient Greek theatre masks ?
- slightly larger than life size making them more visible
- tragic masks painted with the solemn expressions of tragic characters
- made of linen, cork or wood and had openings for eyes and the mouth
- some hair attached at the top to act as a wig
Why did masks aid the performance with regards to actors roles ?
Since only three actors would have been on stage it allowed masks to convey the changing of characters
What could masks do to the action ?
Add a great deal for example when Oedipus arrives back on stage after blinding himself
What else do masks do to help audience members appreciate the drama ?
Allow audience members to easily identify characters as soon as they arrive on stage Eg god or old man ect
What were the two different Greek clothing items ?
The chiton: full length robe
A himation: this was a shorter cloak which went over the chiton and reached down to the knees
What were tragic costumes like ?
Closely fitted, had sleeves, were often ornate and colourful with a rich patchwork of different patterns
This reflected the grand and heroic characters of the genre
