25
Why did Wyatt rebel?
-was fearful that the marriage to Phillip would mean he would lose his position and influence
26
Reasons why the Wyatt rebellion can be seen as successful?
-if all 4 prongs had occurred it may have succeeded - if Wyatt had entered London sooner then Mary may not have been able to raise forces -Got Norfolk and all his forces on his side -only loyalty of nobles saved Mary -the marriage was very unpopular -Raised a force of 3000 men in Winter -Marched towards London, the center of government
27
Reasons why the Wyatt rebellion can be seen as unsuccessful?
-majority of population was not involved in unrest -Wyatt failed to gain support of prominent figures -Mary’s rallying cry in London helped build support for her -Mary ignored advice to leave London which forced rebels to ave to actually try take London -Only 100 of the commoners were executed after -Of the leaders only Wyatt was executed -Wyatt too cautious- wasted time -after 1549 the majority of the population realized rebellion didn't work and property owners had too much to lose
28
What can be seen as the 4 causes of the Wyatt Rebellion?
-Economic -Nationalism -Religion -Power
29

-only motivated by marriage issue -shouted ‘We are all Englishmen’ -In a religiously divided nation playing on Nationalism would always get him the most support
30

-Wyatt was a member of the Kent gentry who was fearful that the marriage would mean he would lose his position and influence. -Mary's arrival on the throne had seen many former supporters of Edward lose their positions.
31
How can religion be seen to be a cause of the Wyatt rebellion?
-leaders of the 4 pronged attack were Protestant -area in Kent where the most support was gained was religiously radical -when rebels reached London they attacked Gardiner’s house -Limited support for Protestantism which affected his support
32
How can marriage be seen to be a cause of the Wyatt rebellion?
-public hated foreigners and feared that the Spanish would replace them -Possible that marriage was the occasion of the rebellion not the cause. -Hatred of foreigners was easily stirred up
33
How can the economy be seen to be a cause of the Wyatt rebellion?
-Most rebels came from Kent where there was loads of unemployment and decline in cloth trade -Amongst rebels there were 30 different trades so had to be other causes
