Why was Mary a threat to Elizabeth?
- She was Elizabeth’s cousin (and her husband at the time was also a cousin) so she had a direct claim to the thrown.

Her husband died and Scotland had been in civil war since 1559- Mary claimed she was the rightful queen of England, Catholics and Protestants started fighting in Scotland (Elizabeth sent troops to help the Protestants) and eventually the French had to withdraw.

Lord Darnley- a Catholic who was related to the Tudor family- instead of Elizabeth’s recommendation: the Earl of Leicester.

Darnley became jealous of David Rizzio, Mary’s secretary. Darnley and his friends murdered Rizzio in front of Mary, stabbing him over 50 times.

His house was blown up by gunpowder and his body was found in the garden, showing signs he was strangled.
Mary and her new lover, the Earl of Bothwell, were suspected.
Mary then married Bothwell- this caused a rebellion to break out in Scotland.

Mary was imprisoned and Bothwell fled abroad.

She raised an army but was defeated. Mary then fled to England hoping to receive mercy from Elizabeth.

She had to be treated like queen (because of the Divine Right of Kings).
