Who was Wyatt?

A

Born in 1521, son of Sir Thomas Wyatt - who was a poet and English ambassador to Spain. Thomas Wyatt the younger (leader of rebellion) was MP for Kent from 1547. Lead the Wyatt rebellion in 1554.

What did Wyatt do wrong with his attack?

A

The events moved to fast and he was forced to attack two months earlier than he had planned. He also told Edward Courtney, who confessed and told Mary.

A

What did Mary do right to defeat Wyatt?

A

She gave a rousing speech within the Guildhall in which she said “I, being your lady and mistress, do as earnestly and tenderly love and favour you.”. This united the Londoners against Wyatt. Mary did not use Spanish troops as these would have fuelled anger against the marriage. Mary waited in London instead of going to Kent.

The French did not invade, Protestants did not get involved, the Duke of Norfolk failed to stop the rebels.
