Marxists Flashcards
Marxist Sociologist
Pierre Bourdieu
Marxist beliefs
Education system reinforces social inequalities arising from social differences in class, gender, and and ethnicity
Formal Curriculum
Dominant culture values are rewarded
Hidden Curriculum
Nonacademic knowledge that someone learns through unspoken rules/norms Marxists argue that this reinforces social class inequalities
Pierre Bourdieu
Argued, the possession or lack of possession of different types of capital shapes opportunity in society. The education system favours the culture of the upper and middle class, giving them an advantage. Working class skills, knowledge, ways of speaking, and behaving are devalued by the education system.
Cultural Reproduction
Middle class values are reflected in the education system. Obedience is passed onto the working class to submit to their status and not revolt.
Marxist view on cultural reproduction
The hidden curriculum reinforces the positions of those with higher cultural capital
Louis Althusser
criticised the education system as it is an Ideological state apparatus
False class consciousness
Believing that nothing is wrong with their working class status. Believing that they deserve to be in the lower class.
The Ideological state Apparatus of schools
Works by passing on ruling class ideology and justifying the capitalist system. Develops the right attitudes and behaviours to ensure future workers accept and submit to exploitation
