Marxist Theories of Postmodernity Flashcards
What does David Harvey theorise?
Postmodernity is the most recent stage of capitalism, rather than being a break away from it. The working-class have become less political due to a rise in living standards, have lost power.
Workers now have less job security, working hours more flexible to suit needs of the firm. Moved away from large-scale mass manufacturing where the development of workers’ organisations, like TU was more possible.
What does Globalisation mean for workers?
Vacant posts can be filled with migrant workers, or production can be moved to another part of the world.
What is the impact of the economy on workers?
The recurrent slowing of economic growth produces unemployment and inflation; workers more vulnerable.
What does the expansion and globalisation of the finance sector mean for workers?
Made possible through developments in communication technology, coupled with less regulation by Governments, means that a small minority has been able to gain massive wealth.
- The gap between the rich and poor has grown rather than narrowed in the last 35 years.
