Hidden curriculum
Refers to the unwritten rules, values and normative behaviour patterns students have to conform to and learn in school.
Ideological state apparatus
Institutions such as: education, the churches, family, media, trade unions , that spread bourgeoisie ideology and ensure that the proletariat is in a state of false consciousness.
Conflict theory
Means that there is inequality between classes and social division.
Cultural capital
The skills, knowledge and attitudes associated with the dominant culture , e.g. the established middle class.
Ideology
A system of ideas, especially forms the basis of economic or political theory, or relates to social structure.
Capitalism
An economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
Habitus
It is the way that individuals perceive the social world around them and react to it.
False consciousness
A way of thinking that prevents a person from perceiving the true nature of their social or economic situation.
Proletariat
Regarded collectively as the working class, who are exploited by the bourgeoisie.
Bourgeoisie
The capitalist class who own most of society’s wealth and means of production.
