Divorce reform act
1969 but came into full force in 1971
New right commentator Rector believes that…
Welfare state damaged marriage because the benefit system has encouraged single parenthood
New right commentator patricia Morgan disapproves the decline in marriage
Why???
New rights believe married couples have a more stable relationship
- have a better relationship with both parents
Secularisation
The decrease in people who are religious

Both parents are together so both the instrumental and expressive roles are provided
Lone parent families may lack care and education attention from the male whereas a female may lack self Discipline and firmness
Arranged marriage

-Robert Epstein (2011)- the strength of an arranged marriage grows over time whereas love marriages detoriate
Because both parents from either parties arrange the marriage and check for compatibility in terms of beliefs, values, interests and goals.
Forced marriage
- illegal in the UK
-marriage conducted without valid consent of off both parties where duress(violence, threats) are a factor
Victims reluctant to come forward due to honour crimes(acid attacks murder)
Same-sex relationships
- Same sex couples act 2013 legalised gay marriage in England and Wales
- civil partnerships didn’t have the status and the same legal rights as straight marriage
