What does Marxism see crime as?
He sees crime as something the bourgeoisie use as a means of ‘social control’.
What does Marxism assume the main cause of crime is?
It assumes that the proletariat class is the main cause of crime.
It also assumes that crime begins in youth.
Crime is a result of unfavourable conditions like poverty.
What does Marxism say capitalism encourages?
2 tier system in society
one group has no money or power and therefore are forced to turn to crime.
What are the strengths of this theory?
- shows how poverty and inequality can cause WC crime.
- shows how capitalism promotes greed which promotes WC crime.
- shows how law making is biassed of WC and are in favour of Bourgeoisie.
What are the weaknesses of this theory?
- ignores connection between crime and other inequalities like gender.
- overpredicts WC crime - not all poor people turn to crime.
