Marxism Flashcards
Par 2: The Bourgeoisie and Proletariat
Marxism recognizes the 2 major social groups that society is split into: the property-owning bourgeoisie and the working-class proletariat. The bourgeoisie derives its power from controlling and owning the means of production. They are involved in large scale operations and corporations that produce the resources that the ppl within society consume. The proletariat includes ppl who work for the ruling class and consume the products the bourgeoisie provides. Marx believed that a major challenge in society is the bourgeoisie exploiting the working class and oppressed them through an economic system called capitalism.
par 3: capitalism
Capitalism is where the means of production is privately owned and profit is earned in competitive conditions. The idea is to maximize profits gained by the proletariat. The bourgeoisie uses capitalism as a way to make sure the lower class citizens of a society remains in their position by increasing the expense of goods. The free market allows the ruling class to decide the prices of their goods, which are often inflated to a cost that is way over its actual value. This challenges the working class to compete for resources with the limited amount of money they have, also controlled by bourgeoisie employers.
par 4: more challenges for working class
- The bourgeoisie do not want to yield control over the means of production so they endeavor to control the proletariat through alienating them from their work.
- the bourgeoisie decreases skilled workers by replacing ppl with technology. When machines can do most of the work in manufacturing, companies save more money. Replacing humans with machines not only benefits the ruling class, but it is an overwhelming disadvantage to the working class, causing them to remain economically oppressed by the ruling class.
- work determines your fiat and lifestyle, the lower your position, less luxurious lifestyle. In capitalist society, the bourgeoisie , or the 1%, are “winning”
