What is Capitalism?
An economic system based on the private ownership of businesses.
What is an ideology?
A set of ideas or values.
What is an ideological state apparatus?
A tool used by the state to brainwash people.
What is a repressive state apparatus?
Anything that controls society through force.
What is a false class consciousness?
The proletariat unaware of their exploitation from the RC.
How do Marxists agree and disagree with Functionalists?
Agree education performs functions for society however argue they’re nothing the interests of the dominant bourgeoisie.

What are the key ideas of Social Control?
- The idea that education is an ideological state apparatus.
- Education creates a false class consciousness.
- There is a hidden curriculum taught covertly (e.g respecting the hierarchy)
How can Social Control be evaluated?
- Functionalists reject this idea and believe the it is far too negative.
- Respecting the hierarchy encourages people to work harder to achieve status.
- Social Solidarity is created.

Hierarchy of head teacher = Hierarchy of CEO
External rewards being the value of a grade = Performance related bonuses
Dress code being uniform = Dress code being smart or having a uniform too
