What is surplus value?
Workers produce more than needed for employees, not getting full profit
What is the economic base?
Consists of:
Means of production- land, factory etc
And| relations of products- shared ownership between those involved in production, who controls production
What is the super structure?
Social institutions, family etc. determined by economic system
What is the dominant ideology?
Ideology of ruling class,
Example- religion keeps w/c subservient “opium of the masses”
What is false class coinsciousness?
Factors that cause the W/C to be brainwashed into accepting explotation
What is a strength of classical Marxism?
Companies able to have factories and produce products in other countries- pay workers less, longer hours
“Super surplus value”
What’s a weakness of classical Marxism?
“Conscious capitalism”- businesses should have higher purpose, make positive impact on society
What does gramski say?- neo Marxism
People’s ideas have relative autonomy from the economic base
What is Gramksi’s hegemony?
Ruling class ideas are dominant, accepted by society
W/C not rebelled, haven’t developed alternative view of how society could be
What does Althusser say capitalist society consists of?
Economic level- economy and production of goods
Political level- government, courts, police
Ideological level- media, religion, education
What’s a strength of neo- Marxism?
Much less deterministic than Marxism
What’s a weakness of Neo Marxism?
Gramski criticised for underemphasising material factors
Example- poverty not acknowledged when explaining why the working class have no had a revolution yet
