What is the ideological function

A

The family is a crucial agent of socialisation. The working class families teach the children to be obedient, comfort to norms and show respect to those in authority. This all helps the capitalist society to grow and these socialisation skills are done through false class consciousness and sanctions

A

Zetskys view on this criticises that of parsons stabilisation of adult personalities. He says instead of coming home to relax the male in the family comes home to help manage the their resentment of the capitalist workplace that generally exploits them, whereas at home the males have a sense of power and control.

What is the unit of consumption

A

Compared to the pre industrial society where the family was a unit of unit of production (supplying everything for themselves) the society/ family are in a constant pursuit of of consumption and materialism. For example ‘keeping up with the jones’ is saying that people in society are in a competition to always be doing better materially than their neighbours or friends.
