marx analysis evaluation Flashcards
eval premise 1 and 2 in terms of externalisation
people have positive work environments under capitalism - ability to build on and develop skills and produce things which are satisfying
not necessarily alienating
eval premise 1 and 2 in terms of exploitation
exploitation need not be inconsistent with being unified with activity and self
can be unified because of exploitation
eval premise 1 and 2 mediated
just because capitalism is subjective does not follow that it influences how a person may think or feel about themselves
- have identity similar to feudulism but more complex
maintain identity by status/title that affirms what they do and therefore who they are
not divided against themselves and others
eval the avoidance argument
marx claims that when not forces labour is “avoided like the plague”
which can be true for many things ie education which is necessary to develop and maintain self realisation
seems to be a human behaviour that is not confined to capitalism and therefore expected in many economic systems as well as communism
must either acccept
-avoidance not sufficient arguement and therefor work under cap not alienating
-active self realisation is alienative and therefore cap not lead to comm
eval premise 3
genuinely human existence
animals not alienated in basic functions
humans presumably only alienated when aware not engaging in human functions
may only accept either
- alienated humans are not animal in their basic functions
-humans animal in their basic functions are not alienated
explain the descriptive argument as an eval of the main conclusion
marx may be stating that deprived of genuinely human existence because ACTUALLY alienated from self, others etc
but many do not regard themselves as deprived which seems questionable - surely relation between being alienated and feeling alienated ie pained state and feeling pained
explain the normative argument as an eval of the main conclusion
marx may be stating that we ought to feel alienated undercapitalism
- explains being alienated relation to feeling alienated
BUT - many not feel alienated therefore not alienated and therefore not deprived of a genuinely human existence
how does marx ultimately contradict himself in his argument
argues alienation worse than skep sit as divided against oneself
BUT if this were true, would not be able to assign slef to own speech or understanding ie ‘i think’ only as ‘he/she/they think’
because of this, to say ‘i am alienated’ would be false
