What are the reasons for the change in attitudes towards marriage, divorce, the family and homosexuality?
- The UK has become a multi-faith, multi-ethnic society
- People are more tolerant of the views of others

What are Christian attitudes to sex outside of marriage?
- Christianity teaches that sex outside marriage is wrong
- Pre-marital sex, adultery and promiscuity are all seen as immoral
- They believe children born outside of marriage may have less stable family life
- They believe promiscuity can lead to sexually transmitted diseases
- They believe adultery bread the marriage vow of faithfulness
- The main purpose of having sex is to have children so this should only happen in a marriage

- “You shall not commit adultery”
- “God want you to be holy and completely free from sexual immortality”
- “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit”
What are some other Christian attitudes to sex outside of marriage?
- Some Christians believe sex before marriage is ok when the couple love each other and are in a long term relationship
- They believe the Bible is old fashioned and out of touch with modern life
- Forbidding sex before marriage can cause unnecessary upset
- It is a good way for a couple to find out if they are suited to each other before marriage
What are Muslim attitudes to sex outside of marriage?
- For Muslims sex outside of marriage is wrong
- Islamic law states that sex should only take place within marriage
- The main purpose of having sex is to have children so this should only happen in a marriage
- Adultery is seen as a sin
- They believe unmarried people should not engage in sex
- Girls and boys are often separated and do not socialise together apart from close family members
- It is forbidden to behave in a sexual manner. Muslims must cover up and dress modestly
What are Roman Catholic Church views on divorce?
They do not allow divorce because:
-Jesus said that divorce is wrong
-Marriage is a sacred commitment made before God so it should not be broken
The Catholic Church will allow annulments (declaring the marriage as void)
What are Protestant Church views on divorce?
They allow divorce because:
- Jesus seemed to allow divorce in the case of unfaithfulness
- People can make mistakes and relationships break down
- God is always ready to forgive sins
- Divorce may be the lesser of two evils and lead to greater happiness
Muslim teachings in the Qur’an against sex outside of marriage
- “Nor come nigh to adultery for it is a shameful deed”
- “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them”
What are most Muslim attitudes to divorce?
Islam teaches that divorce is allowed in certain circumstances (e.g. unfaithfulness). However a couple must do everything they can to make the relationship work first.. Divorce is allowed in the Qur’an

Some may argue that family is very important and so they should do everything they can to avoid getting divorced. They may also argue that divorce can lead to unhappiness which they want to avoid. Divorce is said to be one of the things most disliked by Allah
