Some may argue that family is very important and so they should do everything they can to avoid getting divorced. They may also argue that divorce can lead to unhappiness which they want to avoid. Divorce is said to be one of the things most disliked by Allah

  • The husband must announce his intention to divorce for the first time
  • The period of waiting (Iddah) starts. The couple continue to live together but should not have sex
  • The husband must announce his intention to divorce for the second time
  • The couple and their families must seek counselling and meditation
  • After 3 months the husband must announce his intention to divorce for the third time
  • After this period the couple are free to remarry

  • Religions teach that parents must care for their children, and children must respect their parents
  • They all share the same beliefs and values so less likely to lead to conflict
  • Religions believe marriage and a family is very important so they are less likely to get divorced
  • The Church/Mosque can help families by offering family services, counselling etc.

  • There are lots of families who are not religious and still happy
  • Religion could cause conflict within a family if the children and the parents disagree on something (i.e. a child is gay, or if they don’t believe in God)
  • Some religions have strict rules that children may find hard to obey (i.e. Muslims should not drink alcohol, or socialise with the opposite sex)

  • It might be a risk to the mother’s health
  • They feel they can’t afford to have children
  • They don’t think they would be good parents
  • They do not want children with that particular person
  • They want to avoid catching an STI

  • The purpose of sex is to have children, so every sexual act should be open to the possibility of having children
  • Using contraception goes against God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply”
  • Sex was a gift from God for procreation and so should allow for the possibility of contraception
  • Contraception has encouraged promiscuity which is immoral and can spread diseases
  • Some forms of contraception (such as the emergency pill) destroy the embryo and so are considered murder as some Christians believe life starts at conception

  • Within a marriage, contraption can be used to help plan and manage a family responsibly
  • Using contraception may be the most loving thing to do if the mother may be at risk, or if they feel they cannot look after the child properly
  • Contraception can help prevent the spread of STI’s which is a loving thing to do
  • God provided us with the knowledge to develop contraception, so it is not a sin to use it

  • In the New Testament it says homosexuals will not go to heaven

  • Relationships should be judged on the strength of love and commitment rather than if it is between a man/woman
  • Homosexual relationships are better than promiscuity
