“Two become one flesh” - Mark

Irretrievable breakdown
Sex before marriage
Bad :
“Foundation of family life” - married couple is better environment for children
“Grave sin” - Catechism of RCC
Cohabiting relationship lasts 3 years whereas marriage lasts 11 years, having sex before relationship will lead people to appreciate it less and won’t go through with a marriage
Good :
Pope Francis (influential) allowed the marriage of a woman who already had a baby, despite it being against Christian views
50% of marriages end in divorce, can have sex without the pain of a bad relationship
Cohabitation can be seen as a trial marriage, so sex is okay
Marriage service
Exchanging vows committing each other for life
Exchanging rings as a sign of the everlasting nature of the relationship
Praying for God’s blessing on the relationship
“What God has joined together, let no man tear asunder”
Divorce
RCC :
Annulment is okay if they were forced into marriage, sexual intercourse did not take place after, they did not know what they were doing, were under the influence
NO WAY JOSÉ
“Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery”
Marriage is a sacrament made before God, should not be broken
A marriage should not end “for any other reason than death”
CofE :
Divorce is allowed
Divorced people are sometimes allowed to remarry
Humans can make mistakes and relationships don’t always work, starting again is healthy
Scottish Protestant Church :
Marriage is not a sacrament so divorce is allowed
Quakers :
Divorce is allowed as people should be able to start relationships again
Divorced are allowed to remarry
Contraception
Secular :
Don’t want to transmit STDs
Lifestyle that is not compatible with children
Becoming pregnant would be harmful to the health of the mother
One or both partners carry a genetically inherited condition
They consider themselves too old/young to have children
They want to plan their own family in their own time
RCC :
NO WAY JOSÉ
Contraception prevents humans from fulfilling God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply”
Sex was given by God for procreation
Contraception encourages promiscuity and the spread of STDs
“All sperm is sacred”
No masturbation either lol
CofE :
Doesn’t regard contraception as against God’s plans
Contraception can be used to protect the health of sexual partners
Reducing size of families gives children a better standard of living
Contraception allows sex to be free from fear of pregnancy and provide the couple with safe pleasure and 0rgazmz
Nothing in the Bible that states contraception is wrong
Family Life
Marriage provides ideal stable environment for children
“Children, obey your parents”
Parents have responsibility to care for their children, take them to be baptised, teach the about God and how to live and accept authority.
“Honour your mother and father” - Ten Commandments
“Grown children have responsibilities towards their parents” - Catechism of RCC
Churches provide a lot of support for families such as youth groups and advice councils

why are attitudes changing
- media : has an impact on what people find to be acceptable and “normal”, different portrayals in different situations
- tolerance : greater acceptance of people’s differences, may have reduced the influence of church teachings
- history : abolition of slavery, voting rights for women, freedom of speech, attitudes are continually changing
- technology : increasing global view of the world, brings about different ideas from different cultures, people more readily accept that some people may respond differently
- multi-faith : mixture of cultures and ideas, people have to come to an agreement about what is acceptable, helps encourage harmony

purpose of marriage

- love : a celebration of two people who love each other, joined in mutual love and companionship
- respect to god : marriage is a sacrament, vows in the presence of god, “those whom god joined together let no one put asunder”
- sex : christians are not allowed to have sex before they are married, they are free to consummate their love after marriage
wedding ceremony
- vows : exchange of vows promises a life-long and exclusive commitment, “in sickness and in health”
- rings : the exchange of the circular rings represents a never ending love for the partner
- blessing : god is part of the marriage service, emphasising the nature and purpose of marriage
- prayer : congregation pray for the couple, and make promises to support their marriage
christians for divorce
- quakers : people make mistakes and relationships break down, starting again can be the healthiest thing,
- c of e : similar to quakers, people make mistakes, jesus said divorce was okay in the case of “marital unfaithfulness”, they are sometimes allowed to remarry in church
- c of s : marriage is not a sacrament, so christians should be allowed to divorce as much as they please, not doing anything against god
- rcc : an annulment is allowed if the couple can prove they did not know what they were doing, they were forced into the marriage and they did not have sex
FINISH
christians against divorce
- rcc - jesus said that divorce was wrong, “anyone who divorces his wife…and marries another woman commits adultery”, adultery is wrong
- sacrament : marriage is a sacrament, catechism says that marriage should not be ended for “any other reason than death”
- 4.
christians for homosexuality
- c of e : should follow jesus’ teachings on agape love, judged on strength of love and commitment, not gender
- quakers : welcome homosexuals into church, religion is spiritual and has nothing to do with sex, bible needs to be interpreted to suit today’s society
- rcc : being homosexual is not a sin based on biblical teachings, only homosexual sex, so if they remain celibate then they “must be accepted with respect”
- respect : god created us all in his image, so we should respect people and accept their sexual orientation
christians against homosexuality
- evangelical : strong opposed, believe they can be changed by prayer, not good for society as it undermines the family, “no man is to have sexual relations with another man” - leviticus
- rcc : sex should only take place within marriage and it is for procreation, since homosexuals cannot have children, their sexual act would be sinful
- st paul : condemns homosexuality alongside adulterers, thieves and drunkards, they are not good people
- baptist : national baptist convention does not permit clergy to officiate same-sex union, “incompatible with biblical teachings”
teachings on family life
- society : christians believe that the family was created by god to keep society together
- respect : children should respect their parents and trust what they are doing
- responsibility : children should look after their parents if they can no longer look after themselves
- religion : parents are to teach their children about christian values and bring them up in a loving, godly home after a baptism

- “honour your mother and father” - commandment
- “they must give them moral support in old age and times of illness, loneliness or distress” - catechism
- “bring them up in the instruction of the lord” - Ephesians
sex outside marriage is wrong
- “do not commit adultery” - 10 commandments
- “marriage is a sign of unity and loyalty” - having sex with someone else is breaking a promise
- “foundation of family life”, need to be the best environment for children
- “outside marriage it constitutes grave sin” - catechism
for sex before marriage
- pope - allowed the marriage of a woman who already had a baby, does not mean christians say it is okay, but times are changing, influences
- divorce : 50% of marriages end in divorce, some people just don’t want to get married but still want to have sex
- love : jesus taught that love is the most important thing, couples should be able to show their love for each other without having to be married
- society : this would be impractical in today’s society, in 1950 5% if babies were to unmarried children but in 2006 it had risen to 44%
against sex before marriage
- family - married couples are deemed to provide a better environment for children than unmarried couples, “foundation of family life”
- rcc : it is a “grave sin” to have sex outside of a marriage - catechism
- duration : cohabiting relationships last 3 years and marriages last 11, shows that sex before marriage leads to people not appreciating love “men should know how to live with his wife in a holy and honourable way”
- promiscuity : sex is a special act between people who care about each other, sex before marriage could lead to people having casual sex with a number of people
types of contraception
- male condom : average success rate of 82%, decreases spread of studs, cheap and easy to use, although possibility of breaking
- implant - releases small amounts of progestogen into the woman’s body, inserted into upper arm, lasts 3 years, 99% reliable, minor side effects
- pill : taken every day for 21 days then 7 day break, releases hormones into bod, success rate of 98%, regular and lighter periods, doesn’t interfere with sex
- morning after : when taken within 24 hours can be 95% effective, prevents ovaries from releasing an egg, less reliable the longer you wait before taking it, can cause nausea
for contraception
- stds : condoms can be used to prevent the spread of stds, not only to stop pregnancy, it is more important to be healthy and not spread diseases
- c of e : reducing size of families give children a better standard of living, if parents can control how many children they have, they can give them a better quality life
- bible : there is nothing in the bible that states that any methods of contraception are wrong
- population : using contraception is a way of maintaining the population of the world, if nobody used contraception then the birth rate would rise rapidly and people would suffer from this
against contraception
- rcc : contraception prevents humans from fulfilling god’s command to “be fruitful and multiply”, not even allowed to masturbate as this is a waste of sperm
- orthodox : similar to rcc, believe that the sole purpose of sex is to have children and pleasure doesn’t actually matter, contraception is unnecessary and wrong
- promiscuity : some say that the use of contraception encourages more people to have sex and be promiscuous, since the risk of pregnancy is significantly lowered
- pill : some forms of contraception could be seen as murder, such as taking the morning after pill which is sometimes referred to as the “abortion pill”
