Marriage Flashcards
1
Q
DOM: ‘I winked and chose a husband’
A
Webster introduces a highly protofem. figure = ‘I chose’ gives her the autonomy to select her own husband.
AO3: Quite uncommon in the renaissance era for a woman to orchestrate her own relationships as this responsibility was typically allocated to a male relative.
AO5: DOM remains unquestionably feminist.

Q
Marriage for self preservation in ASCND vs. for love in TDOM
A
- Stella chooses Stanley over her sister bc she recognises that she cannot survive as an independent woman (whom Blanche symbolises)
AO5: ….Stella’s refusal to believe Blanche [regarding the rape] is a commital to self-preservation rather than love. - Blanche also wishes to marry to preserve her image and evade judgement as a ‘whore’ so she ‘wants Mitch very badly’
Contrastingly the DOM specifically chooses a marriage that will destroy her social reputation!!!!
