Civil marriage

Civil partnership
The legal union of two people of the same gender.
Cohabitation
A couple living together without being married or in a civil partnership.
Commitment
The act of making a promise or pledge.
Contract
A binding agreement between two sides.
Covenant
An agreement based on promises between two; often linked to religion, so includes an agreement before and with God.
Polygamy
The practice of having multiple spouses (wives and/or husbands).
Sacrament
A ritual through which the believer receives a special gift of grace; The external and visible sign of an inward grace.

Promises made during a marriage ceremony.

The Bible teaches that Eve was made from Adam’s rib and so “This is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh”. This suggests marriages binds the two people, to create a new family.

Why do Muslims think marriage is so important?
The Hadith teaches that “there is no institution in Islam more beloved and dearer (to God) than marriage”, which means that Muslims want to marry to be loved by God and in his favour.
