Markovnikoff's Rule Flashcards
When is Markovnikoff’s rule used?
When there are unsymmetrical reactants in a reaction that produces a major and minor product
What does Markovnikoff’s rule state?
The major product is the product where the hydrogen of a reactant attaches itself to the carbon with the highest number of pre-existing hydrogens. The minor product is the product where the hydrogen of a reactant attaches itself to the carbon with the lowest number of pre-existing hydrogens.
When is there no major or minor product with Markovnikoff’s rule?
When there is a 50/50 split and all available spaces have equal numbers of pre-existing hydrogens
What is the only type of reaction Markovnikoff’s rule is used in?
Addition reactions
What does anti-Markovnikoff’s rule state?
The major product will be the one where the hydrogen removed in the reaction comes from the carbon with the least number of hydrogens attached to it
What is the only type of reaction anti-Markovnikoff’s rule is used in?
Elimination reactions
