Sherman Antitrust Act
- 1890
- prohibits restrain of trade & MONOPOLIES.
- identifies a competitive marketing system as a national policy goal.
Clayton Act
- 1914
- strengthens the Sherman Act by restricting such practices as:
- PRICE discrimination
- tying contracts
- interlocking boards of directors where the effect “may be to substantially lessen competition or trend to create a monopoly”.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
- 1914
- prohibits unfair methods of competition, establishes the FTC, an administrative agency that investigates business practices & enforces the FTC Act
Wheeler-Lea Act
- 1938
- Amends the FTC Act to outlaw additional unfair practices - Gives the FTC jurisdiction over false & misleading advertising.
Digital Millennium Copryright Act
- 1998
- Protects intellectual property rights by prohibiting copying or downloading of digital files.
Robinson-Patman Act
- 1936
- prohibits price discrimination in sales to wholesalers, retailer, or other producers
- prohibits selling at unreasonably low prices to eliminate competition.
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
- 1993
- Int’l trade agreement b/t Canada, Mexico, USA
- designed to facilitate trade by removing tariffs & other trade barriers among the three nations.
Federal Food & Drug Act
- 1906
- prohibits adulteration & misbranding of food & drugs involves in interstate commerce, strengthened by The Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act (1938) & the Keauver-Harris Drug Amendment (1962)
National Environmental Policy Act
- 1970
- Establishes the Environmental Protection Agency to deal w/various types of pollution & organizations that create pollution.
Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act

- prohibits tobacco advertising on radio & TV
Consumer Product Safety Act
- 1972
- created the consumer product safety commission, which has authority to specify safety standards for most products.
Children’s Online Protection Act
- 1998
- Empowers FTC to set rules regarding how & when marketers must obtain parental permission before asking children marketing research questions.
Identity Theft & Assumption Deterrence Act
- 1998
- Makes it a federal crime to unlawfully use or transfer another person’s identification w/the intent to violate the law.
Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act
- 1999
- Bans the bad-faith purchase of domain names that are identical or confusingly similar to existing registered trademarks.
Electronic Signature Act
- 2001
- Gives electronic signatures the same legal weight as handwritten signatures.
