Marine vertebrates. Flashcards
Salmon and trout belong to this order. Both types of fish have their pelvic (ventral) fins located far back on the body. They also possess a forked tail. All members of this order are born in freshwater. They then migrate to the ocean, where they spend most of their lives. They return to their freshwater nurseries only to spawn.
Salmoniformes.
The order comprises eels. They have characteristically long, slender bodies. They lack pelvic (ventral) fins and most do not have pectoral (breast) fins.
Anguilliformes
The order includes herrings, sardines, and anchovies. Most fish in this order are smaller than 12 inches in length. Most fish in this group display an important behavioral characteristic called schooling. The fish swim together in groups, which may include up to a million or more individuals and appear to behave as one large organism as they move.
Clupeiformes
The well-known codfish belongs to this order. A common feature of fish in this order is that the pectoral fin is positioned behind the pelvic fin. The fins of these fish are also spineless.
Gadiformes
Tuna and mackerel are examples of this order. It’s the largest order of fish with diverse characteristics. However, a common characteristic is that all representatives resemble the body structure of the perch fish—thin and oval shaped, tapered at the front and back. Most have the leading ray on the dorsal and anal fin modified into a spine.
Perciformes
________ is a form of structural tissue that is softer and more flexible than bone.
Cartilage.
In this group, the gill slits are located on the lower side of the body. These species have flattened bodies and long side fins that are fused to the head. Examples include rays and skates.
Batoidea.
These species have gills on the side and small, unfused side fins. They have rounded bodies. Sharks are an example of this group.
Selachii.
Tetrapods.
Creatures with four limbs.
The order of reptiles that includes turtles and tortoises, and is characterized by their bony or cartilaginous shell
Testudines.
