Marine Transportation + Deposition Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 main processes of transportation?
A
- traction
- saltation
- suspension
- solution
2
Q
What is traction?
A
- large, heavy sediment rolled along seabed pushed by currents
3
Q
What is saltation?
A
- smaller sediment bounced along seabed, pushed by currents
- sediment too heavy to b picked up by flow of water
4
Q
What is suspension?
A
- small sediment carried within flow of water
- greater velocities of water are able to suspend larger + heavier sediment
5
Q
What is solution?
A
-
dissolved material carried within water
- potentially in a chemical form
6
Q
When does deposition occur?
A
- when sediment is too heavy for the water to carry it, or if the wave losses energy
7
Q
What type of sediment do high-energy coastlines deposit + why?
A
- larger rocks + shingle bc high-energy coastlines continue to transport smaller sediment
8
Q
Why type of sediment do low-energy coastlines deposit?
A
- smaller sediment in areas where there’s a much lower water velocity
9
Q
What are e.g.s of types of deposition?
A
- gravity settling
- flocculation
10
Q
What is gravity settling?
A
- when the water’s velocity dec. so sediment begins to be deposited
11
Q
What is flocculation?
A
- when clay particles clump together due to chemical attraction + then sink due to their high density
- important process in salt + tidal marshes
