Marine Habitats Terms Flashcards
continental shelf
where we do most of our activities, boating and such, relatively shallow as far as oceans go
pelagic vs benthic
pel - in the water column (shrimp able to pedal at the top), ben - on the bottom or in the bottom of that water column, rooted plants & attached algae
intertidal & subtidal
inter - just wet for part of the day (littoral zone), sub - always wet (sublittoral zone) - notes have picture examples
planktonic
at the mercy of ocean currents, small with limited abilities - drifters, baby things - what we’ve interacted with at shore line spent time as plankton - microscopic
suspension feeder
consume phytoplankton
sit and wait
herbivores that capture by waiting for their prey ie - jellyfish, angler fish and anemone
countershading
camouflage
primary producer
carbon fixers, base of the food web
barnacle (percebes)
$80/lb really hard to get
sea star
benthic carnivore
anglerfish
kind of sit and wait, carnivore
sperm whale
carnivore hunter in open ocean
zooplankton
eat phytoplankton, also drifters, herbivores - eaten by anchovies
phytoplankton
bottom of the food chain, drifting plants
nektonic
doesn’t have to follow currents
