Troubling Youth = Primarily a threat to others and to society

Youth Crime, gangs, school shooter
What are some examples of Troubled Youth?
drug use, binge drinking, self harm
What are the perceptions of youth crime?
Popular image, i.e. out of control, dangerous

According to UCR: youth and adult crime increased from 1962-1990
Peaked in 1991, falling since then

Often deployed with limited understanding of sociological, demographical, criminological, and legal processes
need to be cautious, how we perceive it
increase in crime may rather be increase in pressure/police force/higher reporting

Steady downward trend
largely overexaggerated

What do statistics say about crime rates of youth?

effected by weather ( cold no one committing)
decrease in young people participation in vice
What are the trends related to alcohol use in youth?
little to some use in early grade 7
most have used by grade 12
Is alcohol use a deviant behaviour?
