What is a cartographer?
A person who is trained to make maps.
Name all three types of map symbols.
Point symbols, Line symbols and Area symbols.
Explain point symbols.
Single buildings, like shops or schools, have point symbols to represent them.
Explain line symbols.
Roads, rivers and railways have line symbols to represent them.
Explain area symbols.
Areas on the ground are spaces that have boundaries around them, such as schools grounds, a park or a province or country.
In point, form describe how to draw a map
- Stretch a map from bird’s eye view.
- Draw a box around your map to show your boundaries.
- Record the distance of your boundaries. This will help you draw it to scale.
- Sketch your map roughly to get all the sizes.
- Redraw your map accurately after you have completed your rough.

What is a line scale?
A line scale is a line below a map that shows the relationship between map distance and ground distance.
What is a word scale?
A word scale gives the relationship between map distance and ground distance as a statement using words and numbers.
What is the difference between a small-scale map and a large scale map?
A small scale map is a map that has squashed everything onto the page so you can see the world or that specific country. It also has small detail. A large scale map is a map which is usually about a small area but has much more detail.
Where is latitude measured from?
East to west.
Where is longitude measured from?
North to south
