Maps, Plates, Airport Markings Flashcards
What are hotspots?
area of increased risk with history/potential for runway incursions or collisions which heightened attention is required
What is controlling visibility or ceiling for an approach?
Visibility
Where can you find the highest obstacle and MSA on SID?
The highest obstacle you can find it by a black bold arrow and MSA (Minimum Safe/Sector Altitude) is shown with a big red circle indicating the sectors and corresponding altitudes are shown
How much clearance does the MSA give you?
What is the difference with the MVA?
1,000 ft above an obstacle within 25nm radius. MVA is a clearance of 3 miles with 1,000ft clearance on obstacle and 2,000’ in mountainous areas
The ILS RWY 1L KLAS what is the highest terrain, MSA, and where’s the FAF?
Black Highest Arrow 8469’, MSA 13200’, FAF at NODIY GS 5300’ (I don’t have Jeppesen chart, this is the FAA version)
- Brief ATL Runway 8L “additional runway information”
- What HIRL CL ALSF-II means.
- What do the numbered bullet points 3 & 4 mean?
- Why it is 8800’ when the runway pavement is 9000’
- HIRL is High Intensity Runway Lights. Starts as white and yellow halfway through the runway or 2,000 ft. Whichever is less. Spaced 200 ft apart. CL is Center Line lights. ALSF-II is Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights. ALSF-I is for Category I Runways. ALSF-II is for Category II Runways. Adds 2 red lights on the side, starting at the final 1,000ft of the lights. ALSF-1 does not have the red lights on the side.
- Bullet points 3 & 4: “3” is 3.0 degree glideslope angle “4” is LDA 8800’
- 9000’ (8L runway length) - 8800’ (LDA 8L) = 200’ is the Stop Way
If you’re taxing from ramp 5 to 26R in ATL , what would be some threats?
Runway incursion hotspots at intersection C crossing both 26L and 26R
Where is the FAF if ATC vectored you below the ILS intercept depicted FAF?
ATC will normally vector below and capture an ILS below. FAF should still be in
front of you
What does the maltese cross on the approach plate mean?
Final Approach Fix
On the ILS Z RWY 02 into Guatemala, coming from the northwest when can you report established on the approach
The IAF for the ILS 02 into Guatemala city is the Aurora VOR, which then routes you to intercept the localizer
Was shown an IFR en route chart - Why is one waypoint shaded in and why one isn’t?
Compulsory waypoint
What is a MEA , and what is the navigational coverage?
Minimum en-route altitude. The MEA provides radio navigation coverage to 4NM either side of the airway.
Note: The answer mentioning 5NM in the exam is wrong
How do you find NOTAMS and hot spots in the JEPP app?
In ForeFlight we use the notams tab. HS are shown by using a circle as well as
“HS1”
Info and WX Tab
What is the minimum visibility to take off from runway 26R in ATL?
500ft (200m) RVR but needs two working RVR. This is a Non Standard Take Off. Not Low Visibility.
Way to read, 2 Engine (Standard) then Adequate, then 2 RVR
Read Minimums from right to left. See Jeppesen chart for explanation
When do VOR’s switch from magnetic to true north?
Define the Polar Region
When the aircraft enters the polar region it will auto switch to TRU. The pilot can also select TRU when outside the polar region.
The polar region is defined as north of 82 deg N latitude or south of 82 deg S latitude
What are MALSR lights , or rabbit lights?
Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Lights, helps us to ensure we are lined up properly with the runway
On the ILS DME-1 RWY01 into Guatamala City, how would you get down if you were high and fast, also what altitude would you climb to if you had to go around without comms?
Descend in the hold. Go around and climb to the highest altitude in the MSA, even if.you might be on the lower side of a sector
