Why are maps produced with different scales?
We need different maps for different reasons. Some large scale maps if we are walking across a town and some small scale maps if we are investigating where the UK is on the continent of Europe.
What is map scale?
Map scale refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the real life distance on the ground
What is a large scale map?
A map that shows some main details of an area. Large scale maps show smaller areas in more detail, such as county maps or town plans might. It may show lots of detail of a local area.
What are small scale maps?
A map that shows the main detail of a larger area. A larger area is shown in less detail
