Political Maps

A

Maps that show different political regions in different colours, and the borders of these regions.

e.g. world map showing countries or Australian map showing separate states.

Physical Maps

A

Maps used to show the natural landforms of a region. Variations in colour & shading are used to show height/depth differences on the map. Political boundaries often not shown.

e.g. Physical map of Aus. showing the Simpson Desert in yellow and the QSL rainforests in green.

Mud Maps

A

Rough maps that are drawn quickly. Often explain how to find a particular feature, and don’t use a scale.

e.g. a rough drawing on how to get from the petrol station to my house.

Topographic Map

A

Maps that show the relief of the land using contour lines. They also show physical and cultural features.

e.g. Topographic map of the Himalayas, showing the increasing height levels of different mountains.

Tourist Map

A

Show tourist attractions, places for tourists to stay and commonly used streets/buildings. Made to help tourist get around easier and receive a basic understanding of the area they are travelling in. Not as detailed as street directories, but they serve a similar function for long-distance travelling.

e.g. Tourist map from Perth to Albany that shows the attractions/stops along the way.

Choropleth Maps

A

Maps that use a spectrum of dark and light shades to show a higher/lower concentration of something in an area.

e.g. The number of university graduates living in different areas of Perth.

Satellite Images

A

Photos of the Earth’s surface taken from satellites. More vibrant, false colours are used to highlight particular features of the Earth’s surface. They are useful for showing temperature, the weather, natural disasters and geological, vegetation or settlement patterns.

e.g. A satellite image of Hurricane Katrina.

Theme Maps

A

A map that shows only specific kinds of related features.

e.g. a map that only shows all the museums in Aus.

Synoptic Charts

A

aka, weather maps. These maps use isobars and other symbols to show the movement of weather systems. They can show us patterns of temperature, rainfall, and wind.

e.g. weather map of an Aus. heatwave on channel 7.
