Characteristics of part of the Earth’s surface.
E.g. Tropical Rainforest creates a landscape of dense vegetation with different canopies at various levels
Physical Feature

(E.g. Topographic map, Mud map, Street Directory map)
Cartographer
Person who creates maps
BOLTSS
Elements of a map.
I.e. Border, Orientation, Legend, Title, Scale & Source
Legend
Provided on a map so that the map reader knows what the symbols on the map represent
Grid Reference
6 figure reading given when locating a feature on a Topographic Map
Scale
Relationship between distance on the map and the distance in the real world.
(E.g. 1 : 100,000 = 1 cm on the map represents 1 km on the Earth’s surface)
Location
Where something is positioned on the Earth’s surface.
E.g. Perth = South West coastline of Australia
Distance
How far apart features are on a map or in a city.
E.g. Churchlands is 14 km away from Perth City
Contour Line
A line joining places of equal heights on a map
Contour Interval
The difference in height between each contour line on a map (usually 20m)
