Remote Sensing?
The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the planet or from other long-distance methods.
Scale
Relationship between the portion of Earth as a whole.
Longitude
Number system used to indicate location of meridians and measuring distance E $ W of the prime meridian.
Latitude
The number system used to indicate the location of parallels drawn on a globe & measuring distance N & S of the equator.
Prime Meridian
The meridian designated as 0 degree longitude, passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich England.
GPS(Global Positioning System)
A system that determine the precise position of something on Earth through a series of satellites tracking stations & receivers.
Catagraphy
The science of map making.
Map
A 2D representation of Earth’s surface or a portion of it.
Projection
System used to transfer locations of Earth’s surface to a flat map
Map scale
Relationship between size of an object on a map and size of actual feature on Earth’s surface.
International Date Line
An arc that follows 180 degrees longitude, although dividing land areas.
East- Clock moves back a day(24 hours).
West- Clock moves forward a day(24 hours).
GIS (Geographic Info. System)
A computer system that stores organize, analyzes, and displays geographic data.
