Mapping/ map skills Flashcards
What is a compass rose? And what does it do?
A little mini compass on a map in a corner that tells you the cardinal directions and usually intermediate directions on a map.
What is a Cartographer?
The scientific name for a map maker.
What is a scale on a map? And what does it do?
A scale is a little kind of rectangle on a map that tells you the distance of an area. For example, if the scale was 1 inch long on the map and the last number was 500 miles, then 1 inch on a map is 500 miles.
What is a grid on a map? And what does it do?
A grid is a bunch of boxes and lines on a map that separate the map into sections, and it helps if you want to find something and faster and easier.
What is a key on a map? And what does it do?
A key on a map is a little box in a corner of a map that tells you what different symbols and shades of colors mean on a map.
What are the Cardinal Directions
The Cardinal Directions are North, East, South, and West.
What do symbols on a map do? Give some examples of symbols you may see.
Symbols on map help the map become more organized because there wouldn’t be a bunch of labels everywhere and they also help people to find what something means faster.
What is latitude and how does it relate to the Equator to the hemispheres?
Latitude is the lines of symmetry that go side to side in the world and it starts from o degrees (the equator) and goes up and down it. It relates to the equator and the hemispheres because latitude starts at the equator, which is 0 degrees latitude and the equator separates the world into the north and south hemispheres.
What is longitude and how does it relate to the Prime Meridian and hemispheres?
Longitude is the lines that go through the earth up and down and start at 0 degrees, too. FACT: It also works with latitude for the time zones. It relates to the Prime Meridian and the hemispheres since it starts at the Prime Meridian and goes right to left or left to right, and the Prime Meridian separates the world into the West and East hemispheres.
What is the Prime Meridian
The Prime Meridian is the earth’s “zipper” which cuts the world in half into the Eastern and Western hemispheres, also it is a line of longitude.
What is the Equator?
The Equator is a line of latitude, also known as the earth’s “belt”, that divides the world into the Northern and Southern hemispheres, also it is where most of the warm weather is.
What is relative location?
It is where a place is located in relation to somewhere else. For example: MI is North of Ohio
What are the five main components of any good map?
Title, labels, compass rose, key/legend, and scale.

Where are are continents located? Put them is biggest to smallest and population from biggest to smallest.
Ex. Africa is south of Europe. Biggest to smallest: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and finally Australia. Biggest to smallest by population: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and finally Antarctica.
Where are the oceans located? Biggest to smallest, too.
The Atlantic is south of the Arctic Ocean. Biggest to smallest: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and finally the Arctic Ocean.
What is the difference between relative location and absolute location? And when would you use them?
The difference between relative location and absolute location is that relative location is where a location is in relation is somewhere, and it uses the cardinal and intermediate directions, while absolute location uses coordinates ( latitude and longitude. You would use relative location if you were a regular person just using a map or talking to someone about where something is, but you’d use absolute location if you were a pilot, fisherman, or taxi driver (using the GPS).
FACTS
The Prime Meridian goes through Europe, Africa, and Antarctica, and the Equator goes through South America, Africa, and Asia. FUN FACT: Africa is the only continent that is in all of the hemispheres.
Parallel vs. Perpendicular
Parallel means that they will never touch like one straight line that is above straight another line is parallel since they will never touch even if they go on and go on and never stop. While perpendicular means that they will cross.
