Map Work Flashcards
What is a map?
A reduced representation of reality
What type of map shows boths natural and man made features?
Topographic (most likely will get topographic map in exam)
Give an example of a ratio scale of a small scale map
1:800 000 000 (1: a lot)
Give an example of a ratio scale of a small large map
1:100 (1: not a lot)
Which map shows a bigger area:
Small scale or large scale?
Small scale (large area smaller)
Which map shows a smaller area:
Small scale or large scale?
Large scale (small area larger)
Symbol for degrees?
°
Symbol for minutes?
’
Symbol for seconds?
”
How do you write coordinates?
Degrees° minutes’ seconds” N/S; Degrees° minutes’ seconds” E/W
How do you write 4 seconds east?
04” E (04 not just 4)
What do you call the line vertically down the middle of the globe?
Prime meridian / Greenwich meridean
What do you call the line horizontally across the middle of the globe?
Equator
What is the coordinates of a spot on the equator?
N/S = 0°
E=W = ?°
What is the coordinates of a spot on the prime meridian?
N/S = ?°
E/W = 0°
What is a word scale?
Uses a statement in words to describe the scale of the map
E.g. one centimeter on the map represents 50km in reality
What is a line/linear scale?
Shows distance on the map compared to distance in reality.
It is usually marked in equal sections
What is a ratio scale?
1: 50 000
(One centimeter on the map represents 50 000cm in reality)
50 000cm = 0,5km
1cm = 0,5 km
How to work out true bearing?
. Draw a line between the two places
. Measure from the place the question says FROM
. Place protactor with 0° on North
. Read clockwise
. If more than 180° when read clockwise:
Flip but add 180°
