How do we use 4 figure grid references?
The first two digit number is called the easting, (they show you how far E/W you are) this is the number along the top or bottom of the map.The second two digit number is called the northing (how far N/S you are). This is the number at the side of
the map.
Draw your fingers together along the lines.
The coordinate you have just found, always refers to the bottom left point of the square.
How do we use 6 figure grid references?
It is the same as 4 figure but is more accurate and we use it the same as a 4 figure grid reference. You need to decide how north the point is on a scale of 1-10 and how east it is on a scale of 1-10. You then put the number of how east it is and put that ater the first two digits of the 4 figure grid reference. You do the same for how north it is but you put it after the next two digits of the 4 figure grid reference.
How do you measre distance with a straight line?
First, you need to look at the scale. e.g. 1cm=2km. Then you take a ruler and you put a mark on the two places you are measuring the distance of. Then you use a ruler to measure the distance in centimeters. So for example if the distance between the two places on the map was 6cm, the actual distance would be 12km.
