This map is a visual representation of a person’s (or a group’s) mental model for a given process or concept.
Cognitive maps
A simple map is used to locate a particular area or the location of something.
Locator map
A map that shows governmental units such as countries, states, and counties. They also show roads, cities, and major features such as the ocean, rivers, and lakes.
Reference Map - Political
This map shows physical features such as lakes, mountains, and rivers.
Reference Map- Physical
These maps contain areas that are shaded or patterned to represent a statistic.
Thematic Map Choropleth
A map that uses dots or a variation of marks to display a feature.
Thematic Map - Dot Distribution
This map uses symbols that vary in size to represent a quantity ( how of something there is).
Thematic map- Proportional Symbol
A map uses continuous lines to indicate points of the same value and is commonly used for weather or topography.
Thematic Map- Isoline
A map in which a geographic size is altered in proportion to a ratio.
