Map Projections Flashcards
What is the strengths and limitations of an equivalent map?
Show accurate area but squish/stretch shape
What is the limitations of an conformal map?
Show accurate shape but inaccurate proportion
What is a conic map?
A conic map is when the surface area and shape is projected onto a cone
Where is the conic map most accurate?
Conic map is the most accurate at the point where the globe meets the cone
What is an Interrupted Projection Map
An interrupted projection map cuts up the oceans to accurately show the size and shape of the landmasses
What is a cylindrical map?
A cylindrical map is when each point on the globe is projected to the inside of an cylinder.
What is the strength and limitations of a cylindrical map?
Shows the correct distance between points but does not show accurate proportion
What is a Mercator Map?
The Mercator map shows accurate shape but distorts size
What is an Al-Adrisi Map?
A map created by an Arab geographer that shows the Mediterranean Sea, northern Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia with the south orientated toward the top
